We’ve got smart, well-educated people living here. Want proof? Examiner found Minnesota to be the No. 6 state with the best scoring schools (2014), Minneapolis St. Paul
made Luminosity’s list of the 50 smartest cities in America
(2013), and The Daily Beast ranked the metro No. 11 in its
list of America’s smartest cities (2012). Called one of the
most literate metros (Central Connecticut State College,
2013) in one of America’s most educated states (Bloomberg,
2013), the Twin Cities is a great place to further your
education or your children’s.
One reason that we’ve earned these honors is that the
area offers great educational choices. Between our top-notch
public school system, our wealth of private school offerings
and the first-rate private and public colleges and universities
statewide, you’re bound to find the right fit.
We have so many options available that when parents search
for schools, the hard part is simply choosing among them.
Between Minneapolis, St. Paul and Bloomington public
school districts there are approximately 83 elementary schools,

open enrollment, what matters is that you find the right
school; it doesn’t matter if that school is next door or across
town (as long as you can provide transportation and there’s
room at the school). Another benefit of open enrollment is
that schools have the extra incentive to work hard to keep
students in their neighborhoods.
To make an informed decision about your child’s education
it’s important to be aware of the options. Minneapolis Public
Schools ( www.mpls.k12.mn.us) identifies a variety of typical
and non-typical options, including community, alternative,
magnet, Montessori, open, immersion and charter schools.
Charter schools are independent public schools sponsored
by a school district, university, the state or a nonprofit
organization, providing a unique option for students
( www.mncharterschools.org). Established here in 1991,
more than 150 charter schools can now be found across
the state, enrolling 43,900 students. In Minnesota, these
From preschool to graduate school, we’ve got options aplenty. With a variety of
education models, strong teachers and diverse curriculums, not only will you
find the right school, but also receive an education that is among the best.
