Spoonbridge
and Cherry
What does an oversized
kitchen utensil and a piece
of fruit mean to us? A
whole lot. Claes Oldenburg,
famous for his extra-large
renditions of everyday
objects, was commissioned,
along with his wife and
collaborator Coosje van
Bruggen, to design the
fountain-sculpture. What
resulted was a 52-foot-
long, 5,800-pound spoon
and 1,200 cherry that sits
alongside more than 40
other works in the 11-acre
Minneapolis Sculpture
Garden. Some refer to it as
the crown jewel of the city’s
park system.
